Kattegattleden with kids

The Kattegattleden trail is a cycling adventure for the whole family. The trail is nearly 400 km long, but you can absolutely just ride a portion of it. Kattegattleden is mostly a fairly flat and easy ride, lined with beaches, cosy cafés and exciting destinations.

4 tips for cycling Kattegattleden with kids:

1. Adapt the route for children

No one in the family will be very happy with a ride that is too long and challenging, with too few breaks. So adapt the stages to the children’s ability and plan plenty of stops for snacks, playtime, meals, swimming or resting.

If you intend to ride the entire trail, it may be wise to plan one bike-free day.

2. Pack smart

Bicycles have a limited capacity for transporting baggage; the best choice is to use bicycle panniers. Make sure your map, phone and wallet are easily accessible. You could also keep rain gear at the top of your pack so that you don’t have to root around if you happen to be surprised by a storm.

For an extra comfy ride, you can order baggage transport. This way, your bags will be ready and waiting when you’re done for the day, and instead of lugging around heavy baggage, you only need to carry your essentials.

3. Ride safe

While Kattegattleden follows the traffic safety requirements for a national bike path, don’t forget that the trail is occasionally shared with cars. You can take a look at the map here on the website to see which stretches are strictly for bicycles, and where traffic is mixed.

Everyone in the family should wear a helmet, of course, and wearing colourful clothes is a good way to ensure you are visible to others on the trail.

4. You can never have too many snacks

Fill your pockets with snacks to grab when your energy is waning. Something as simple as raisins, biscuits or a piece of chocolate might be just what you need to feel ready to get back in the saddle.

And remember to carry water bottles so that you can stay hydrated.
